Luckily that situation changed and I worked hard at being kinder day by day. It is an ongoing effort. But not nice. Nice = fake.

The real disturbing part is exactly what you describe in the last paragraphs. I live in Utah and find the culture nauseating with the fake niceness and passive, almost subservient attitudes. Everyone avoiding any disagreement, much less conflict. Over explaining and the need to justify saying no. I want nothing to do with the organizations in the area and find few people worthy of trust. How do you trust or associate with people who cannot be honest about how they feel or stand for anything that may be different. 99% of the people I can be comfortable with are, of course prior service.

But beyond the rant for a moment. The kind vs nice philosophy (if we can call it that) needs to be shared with more people. Thank you for explaining it far more effectively than I can. I could not believe what he told me. Not only does he NOT carry with one in the chamber, but the magazine stays in his shirt pocket! He is convinced that if the need were to arise, he could lock and load in plenty of time. I told him that when the adrenaline starts pumping and he fumbles and drops his magazine, the bad guy will be taking his gun and beat him to death with it. My partner and I had a brief interview with our Bishop a few weeks after I received the call. We sat to discuss, security measures for our Ward. Long and short, we were told, "No Way!" Long and short of it, the meeting did not go as we had hoped, not that we wanted roving armed patrols, far from it. But, what we did want was a team of trained observers that would know what signals to use, alarms to sound etc. IF, and potentially when, an emergency situation presented itself. In other words, we were told that the Brethren all but demand that when we are on Church properties, we are to stay in condition white to very "pale" yellow. His counsel, as well as the previous Bishop was, that we should be prepared but NOT to go on an offensive even IF there is an active shooter. We were told that we have chairs to throw, hymn books to throw and pews to hide beneath plus, we have strength in numbers. Meaning a bum's rush/dogpile on the rabbit. We asked about being in condition yellow, and he said, that on an individual level as heads of our families, "that's a decision we each need to make," but as far as being "sheepdogs" in our Ward, it's not permitted. I am curious and anxiously solicit your thoughts on this. I know you are getting only my perspective of this and yes I condensed it down as much as absolutely possible to get the gist of what I was hoping to convey out. Don't get me wrong here, in no way am I disparaging or "knocking" on our Bishop, he read much of what he conveyed to us right out of the handbook. He said that in his personal family, in his home, or when he is with his family, he plays by his own rules of conviction. But as far as the Ward/Stake meetings and functions and activities go, we must adhere to policy from the Brethren. I can't argue with that one point but still....
archerytomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14525980914315675339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686059350313965784.post-14149690135585942952021-12-11T06:40:48.200-06:002021-12-11T06:40:48.200-06:00I learned a powerful lot from the Colonel but, to ...I learned a powerful lot from the Colonel but, to paraphrase his own teachings, the color code system is great, far from perfect, easy to adapt and learn to implement and impossible to do at the same time.archerytomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14525980914315675339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686059350313965784.post-54646981540365246112021-11-21T14:52:11.960-06:002021-11-21T14:52:11.960-06:00You are right Charles my brother! You are right Charles my brother!Burnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14438938132273366136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686059350313965784.post-2261574045402697282021-10-08T14:17:04.896-05:002021-10-08T14:17:04.896-05:00Just found the site by accident. If you don't have reliable, local "intell", don't be there. The internet mapping outlets, tend to be "anti racist" and will route suckers through the gates of Hell where a convoy of up-armoured HUMVVs escorted by Bradleys would be more appropriate, and only if there were Apaches on call.

Look out the window. It the place looks bad enough to make you fearful if you had to change a tire, TURN AROUND!

Watch out for fools who say, "Aw. I grew up near there. "Tain't nothing".

Keep your car doors locked, always.

The most "direct" route, probably isn't the "preferred" route. Interstate "by passes" (beltways, circumferentials) are usually worth the time when traveling if you don't have local intell.

Stay, and act, alert especially when on mass transit. Loose the ear buds (phones). Read the emails or watch the video later. If you ain't watching, someone else is. If at a meeting, pocket the name tag before going out on the street. That name tag just says that you will not be available as a "witness" in 2 or 3 days. If so, I apologize. But I have seen the exact same thing occur in the protestant churches over the past 40 or so years that I have been involved with them.
I felt a call to attend Bible college, with the thought of becoming a Pastor, in around 1982. It took almost 2 years to get started, but I did attend, and found that Bible college is the best place to become carnal. And as far back as that, I sensed that something was amiss. The college I attended was the Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music. It has since combined with Grand Rapids Bible College into Cornerstone University.
What was creeping into the professors was a liberalism that as, at that time, a Baptist, I could easily sense. They didn't teach the old themes of how to study the Bible, or how to preach out of it, but rather how to come up with new or non traditional ways to look at it. In fact, later on, in my 30's, I saw a minister actually use not the Bible, but a recent copy of the Readers Digest to preach his sermon from.
An example of my Bible college days, is from Speech 101. The first speech assigned was simply to introduce ourselves to the class. We all did about the same thing, and I got I think like a B- or something.
Well the next assignment was to explain something to the class, our choice of topics. I had learned my lesson. I think it was just a 3 or 5 minute speech. Instead of giving a straight on speech, I came up with the idea of talking on the telephone with a friend, explaining a new book that I had read, something that was popular at the time. After the speech the Professor could hardly contain his glee, as he exclaimed how that was what he was looking for, a new and different way of doing things, etc. And of course, I got an A on that assignment.
If that were the only time that it happened, fine, but sadly, I could see it over and over in many of my classes. One professor, however, was not that way. He was obviously old school, and he was tough. He assigned tons of reading, his tests asked the question, Is your reading up to date? and he expected you to answer honestly. His Old Testament survey made us memorize things like the ten plagues of Egypt, the twelve tribes of Israel, and more, all on the same test. And he graded tough.
He also taught the Gospel of John. And was equally tough. But you know what? I learned to love the Old Testament, and I KNOW the Gospel of John. And though that professor is long passed away, I appreciate him like no other person who ever taught me about the Bible. Because he forced me to dig, and to make myself understand that I CAN learn.
I said that I am no longer a Baptist. I say this because I honestly had doctrinal issues with what they stood for. Of course, when you say Baptist, you are not really saying much. It is kind of like going into a bar and saying, "give me a beer." There are so many flavors of Baptists, from those who protest at military funerals, to those who handle snakes, to those who fly rainbow flags right below the American flag.
I won't bother to go into some of the reasons that I can't agree with their doctrine, other than to say, a lot of it is due to hypocrisy.
tlk78@yahoo.comPigpen51https://www.blogger.com/profile/01683463718454987063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686059350313965784.post-935321684582475952021-09-16T18:11:42.146-05:002021-09-16T18:11:42.146-05:00Exmos are not used to anyone fighting back. I taught aggressive actions including, hands on. POST Council in Georgia said my style was TOO aggressive. They could not deny my courses of fire as they complied with "standards" however, the way I taught is what they didn't like. We then developed our County's first SWAT Team, the county administrators echoed POST and said the name/title SWAT was also TOO aggressive. So, in 1986, I created the first CERT program in the State. Critical Emergency Response Team. I think it was picked up by other agencies, who changed the name a bit to fit their particular narrative. The only reason I even make mention of that here is, a couple of years ago, there was a direct imminent threat made to Nauvoo, Ward and Stake. When several of us went to the Bishop to seek permission for there to be security teams created. He flatly denied it saying that, "if we members die by the hands of other while we are worshiping, what more surety do we need that we will stand before the bar of judgement and hearing, those words.." Our Sheepdogs, ignored his denial and formed our own roving patrols outside and strategically placed members on the inside of the building. We operated this way for several weeks until, one of the brethren on the team could not stand doing this without consent and when to the Bishop with what we had been doing. It did not go well for any of us. But we still to this day remain vigilant, on guard and ready for whatever, the bad guys want to attempt short of a bio/nuke attack. There is so much more I wanted to include here but for the sake of others, lol, have withheld. I remember this very event and post. As alw...Hey! I remember this very event and post. As always, it is very important to check your carry gear carefully. And I always have preferred a carry gun with some sort of manual safety lever.
My first carry gun was actually a 9 round .22 cal. H & R revolver. My second one was a P 64, basically a clone of a Walther PPK, in 9 mm Makarov.
Since then, all of my carry guns have been semi auto with some type of manual safety.
I know that many, many thousands of people have safely carried guns like the Glock, and others, for decades, with no problem. For me, having grown up around guns my entire life, hunting and such, I have always carried one in the chamber with the safety on, and always followed safe practices.
I see the modern practice of carrying AIWB, and I get the willies, pun intended, since it seems to break several of the 4 rules of safe gun handling. However, don't ever voice those questions, to seemingly kind and decent gun authorities, because you run the risk of being called everything other than a Christian. It seems that passions run quite high about this topic. One would think that I broached the subject of pre rapture or post rapture resurrection.
Yes, I am a Christian who attended Bible College in the early 80's, and have seen how Christians are the only group around who shoot their wounded. Seriously though, I know it is just my preference about the manual safety, and it is not a deal breaker for thousands of people, who train without it, and are just as safe and I am. I just grew up using it as my one last layer of anti stupid tax, and while it is not a crutch that I lean on, it is, at the same time, a check on myself, to ensure that I am following my own sense of propriety if and when the need to draw my firearm and shoot in defense of self or others is called upon. Pray to God that it never happens.
I had actually forgotten about your blog, and how much I learned from it. I am glad that I stumbled onto it again, and will book mark it, and will be checking into it daily. My prayers are going out for you on this Lord's day, and every day after. Be well, and may God be blessed in your lives.Pigpen51https://www.blogger.com/profile/01683463718454987063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686059350313965784.post-41223075161021433302021-06-26T23:04:07.741-05:002021-06-26T23:04:07.741-05:00I am related to orrin porter rockwell I recently f...I am related to orrin porter rockwell I recently found out that he is a great great uncle. I am no fan of RHF (RFH) training. However, certain aspects of this mindset can and in my opinion should be incorporated into every Church security team's playbook.

IF my Bishop's counsel to me concerning security teams and being armed is any indicator, our congregations are in a world of hurt before trouble even begins. Let me explain;

It was the first day/night of meetings after the LDS Bishop was killed inside the meeting house (forgive that I have forgotten which state it was in, but California keeps coming to mind), anyway, I, being a retired LEO and Academy Firearms Instructor from Georgia always carried concealed even to church meetings.

This one Sunday after Sacrament, the Bishop wanted a "quick word" with me in his office. Once inside, he quietly mentioned that he had noticed my "hardware" and that it concerned him greatly. I reminded him of my experience and training to wit, he said, and I quote, "that doesn't apply in Church settings."

Stunned, I must have glared at him intensely because, he assured me that he wasn't chastising me but rather he was reminding me that the carrying of firearms or other weapons in Church or church meetings (no matter what or where they were conducted) is strictly prohibited by the 1st Presidency with the sole exceptions of being active duty military or law enforcement on duty. I politely informed him that I was very well versed in the Constitutional Amendments namely the 2nd and was equally sure of Illinois laws and Nauvoo laws.

I then asked him if he was opposed to the 2nd to wit, he promptly stated, "oh heavens no!" It was just that, as Bishop, he would rather die in the Lords house or while going about the Lord's errands, and he would counsel the entire Ward with like pleas. He said it would be better for the Congregation to be killed by a "shooter" while in the House of the Lord worshiping as best they knew how. It wasn't very many weeks after that 'brief' word of counsel that the 1st Presidency sent the letter around.

I went to the Stake Prez after that to seek his wisdom on this issue. He leaned back in his chair and said to me matter-of-factly, "Brother..., I and I believe the Lord expects you and each of us to protect and defend your family and loved ones at all times and in all places."archerytomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14525980914315675339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686059350313965784.post-68121285647380790772021-01-09T02:30:37.548-06:002021-01-09T02:30:37.548-06:00I am wondering now what your thoughts are about th...I am wondering now what your thoughts are about the state of the country now that it's 7 months later, and we are about to enter into a very different future for America???archerytomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14525980914315675339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686059350313965784.post-88242425413637218602020-11-19T08:48:24.939-06:002020-11-19T08:48:24.939-06:00I read this with baited breath but, when I got to ...I read this with baited breath but, when I got to the spot where you said, "the church has adopted....." In the last days/end times, we are called to sacrifice and hardship. Many may be called to be Danites for the sake of the innocent and pure in heart.
