Persecution is Heating Up!

What do I do with the frustration of being attacked?  Usually I “lock and load” when it is an attack that I perceive.  I want to defend.

Let me say here before I get into my “violent” ways.  I want to be a peacemaker.  I say that being a follower of Jesus Christ should be everyone’s top priority.  My advice would always be to learn about Christ, preach Christ, and follow Him and become like Him with your heart, mind, might, and strength.  Many have accused me of the direct opposite but that’s neither here nor there.  I advocate defense.  I advocate preparedness.  Being able to protect our families and the Lord’s Church can be achieved at the same time as being a Christian and seeking Christ.  The reason I even talk about defense is there are very few voices out there talking about Christian defense.  A big voice in this is John Lovell and the Warrior Poet society. I wholeheartedly recommend them!

https://www.watchwpsn.com/

But as far as a Christian LDS voice, I think I am alone.  I don’t want a discussion on whether you think The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christian or not.  It’s right there in our name, but I guess that’s too hard to figure out…

Most attacks we have are anti-this or anti-that.  Most attacks are not physical. Until now. But most of the time the attack is not worthy of anything.  Anti-mormon material is not difficult to predict.  In my youth it was the movie “The Godmakers.”  The Tanners were the chief attackers leading the charge.  Since then, most of the attacks have moved to the internet.  The CES letter is the latest thing.  It is a list of questions.  Jeremy Runnells likes the world to think that he is honest and a seeker of truth.  He is a Zerahemnah.  An ex-member who wants to tear down the church and lead as many people as he can away.  He’s a snake like John Dehlin.  What bothers me about Runnells is many years ago when the CES letter came out I could answer several of his questions.  Why the heck couldn’t Runnells do that himself?  He always claims he’s not a scholar and I agree.   But you do not have to be a scholar to find most of these answers! If people would look as skeptically on his letter as they do on his amazing “discoveries”.  Much of what he “found out” that lead him to questions I already knew.  We as members need to study and know our history.  Most members don’t put in the work and then some yo-yo like Runnells brings out this obscure bit of history and suddenly, their testimony is in “crisis”.  I’m not an idiot, I know good people can have real doubts but to sit around with the information at your fingertips and wait for someone trying to tear down the church to bring this stuff “to light”, is plain lazy.  There’s no excuse.  I have a big problem with that.  There is little out there that surprises me.  I know I don’t know everything, but I continue to study and learn.  Most of what they bring out is trivial and has no bearing on my salvation.

One of the things that came out of the attack in Michigan is that we learned that evangelical Christians hate us.  They think we’re a satanic cult!  The guy that shot up and burned the chapel in Michigan hated “Mormons”.  If you listen to Christian podcasters and online influencers, you’ll learn how they feel about us.  I know that there are many in other Christian religions who are positive toward us and supportive.  But I noticed that several of them, after the attack, gave the Mormons “thoughts and prayers” but in the same breath said, “but you know they are a demonic cult.”  That isn’t support!  That is enmity!

I don’t want to say I told you so, but I did in 2022.

“But this policy is a disaster waiting to happen. I predict it will happen one day.”

From “Bishops and Security: Comment Reply” Sep 9, 2022

I don’t know if an armed person in that chapel would have made a difference.  But as someone who’s been shot at and has shot back, I can tell you, when someone shoots in your direction you duck!  Even if this guy was looking for a “death-by-cop” situation the attack would have been different. The police reaction was amazingly fast yet four people died.  Perhaps 2 or 3 might still be alive with an armed person on station when the attack started.  Someone radicalized this murderer.  Was it the pastors that preach Mormons are demons?  Was it another influencer getting people riled up because they left the Church but can’t leave the Church alone?  I don’t know but I do know that if this type of persecution persists, something should be done.  What that is I also don’t know.  It’s beyond my Elders Quorum.

At the very least we should teach situational awareness.  The Cooper Color code is a good place to start.  These 4 conditions help to keep our heads on a swivel.

CONDITION WHITE- White is the lowest level on the escalator. In Condition White one is unaware, not alert, and oblivious. This state can be characterized as "daydreaming" or "preoccupied". People in White tend to walk around with their heads down, as if watching their own feet or looking at their phone. They do not notice the impending danger until it literally has them by the throat.
CONDITION YELLOW- This is a relaxed state of general alertness, with no specific focal point. You are not looking for anything or anyone in particular; you simply have your head up and your eyes open. You are alert and aware of your surroundings. You are difficult to surprise; therefore, you are difficult to harm. You do not expect to be attacked today. You simply recognize the possibility.
CONDITION ORANGE- This is a heightened state of alertness, with a specific focal point. The entire difference between Yellow and Orange is this specific target for your attention. Your focal point is the person who is doing whatever drew your attention to him. It might be the fact that he is wearing a field jacket in August. It might be that he's standing by a column in the parking garage, instead of going into the building, or getting in a car and leaving. It might be that you have been in five stores at the mall and saw this same guy in every one of them. His actions have caused you to take note of him, so you must assess him as a potential threat, just as the fighter pilot assessed the blip earlier.
CONDITION RED- In Red, you are ready to fight! You may, or may not, be fighting, but you are

MENTALLY PREPARED to fight. In many, or perhaps even most, circumstances where you have gone fully to Red, you will not actually physically do anything at all. The entire process of escalating from Yellow to Orange, to Red, then de-escalating right back down the scale as the situation is resolved, occurs without any actual physical activity on your part. The key is that you were mentally prepared for a conflict and thus could physically act if the situation demanded.

I’m not trying to be critical of my Church or its leaders.  I’d like to think that they are discussing the soft target that they have created and are suggesting solutions.  I would hope that this is a wake-up call for some who live with the delusion that past violence on Church property is not isolated cases.  This was not random.  It was specific.  The FBI called the attack “targeted violence”.  There are other nut cases out there.  If we are prepared, we will not fear.  Please be aware.  Please teach your family what to do in case of an attack at Church.  Don’t be caught in White in the chapel.

I’ve written on this topic for some time.  Here are some of my past posts.

Patriots: Special Forces Underground

Last year I got a cryptic message I thought was a scam.  It involved a friend of mine from my military days.  He was having difficulty with his adult daughter.  She had a stalker, and he had tried to take care of this stalker the right way.  He first dealt with the campus police where his daughter went to college and also with the local PD of the town his daughter’s college is located.  This yielded very little but frustration.  He tracked down this stalker who was arrogant about what anyone could do to him.  He hadn’t crossed certain lines otherwise law enforcement could move on him. He started to stalk in earnest to where my friend’s daughter wanted to withdraw from school and go home.  My friend is an ex-green beret and took matters into his own hands.  He was assisted and the stalker was neutralized. (No not in the traditionalized sense.  He was not killed or hospitalized.  Just scared.)  My friend told me he couldn't see any other way to persuade the stalker of the error of his ways.  Fear works.

Some people talk about a special forces underground.  This is touted as a crazy organization that will rise up and save us from the oppressive UN commies who will take over the country.  This is a great cover for the truth.  Often conspiracy theories work as a good cover.  The underground exists and it is made up of many special operations personnel.  Some of them active, most dormant.  When I was younger we had a group that I served with who ran some “missions” several times.  My assignment was logistics.  Most guys had no idea what anyone else was doing, or who was doing it.  Plausible deniability.

As we got older, we were called less and less.  My last mission was in 1997.

The best way that I can describe it is a scene from the old TV series called “The Unit” 2006-2009. The scene is Jonas Blaine talking to a reporter about a particular story she was going to report.

Reporter: I have a job to do.

Jonas: I want you to postpone it.

Reporter: Why should I?

Jonas: [Takes a card from his pocket and writes his number down] Take this card. Hold on to it.

Reporter: What is that?

Jonas: No matter how blessed our lives, how charmed our existence, things still, inevitably, irrevocably, go wrong. Your mother is swindled out of her savings. Your estranged husband runs off with your kids. Your best friend goes on vacation in a foreign land and disappears. Eventually, bad things find us all. You ever hear of the Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card? This is a Get-Out-of-Hell card. At some point in your life, God forbid, you have nowhere else to turn, call that number. That is why you are going to postpone your job.

This is the purpose of this brotherhood.  To right wrongs and to defend each other and still, this country.  Will that mission change one day?  Quite possibly.  Will it be to defeat the new world order or UN troops or some other questionable group?  I do not know.  The group that I was affiliated with had a “committee”.  This committee decided what missions needed to be taken and for whom. Committee members rotated and usually only for a period of a year.  I’ve asked several present and past members of this underground if I can share this info and I’ve been given the green light.  I’ve written about this briefly before also. (2019 and more recent 1-17-20)

The ”PS” from 2019 and 2020 are here.

PS I asked several SOP members including Green Beret if I should write this article, and was given their blessing. All of this information can be found on the internet except my personal experiences.

PPS Update 2/20/2019

I was contacted by 2 operators and ex-operators who confirm this brotherhood. They say they do not mind anyone being aware of the Underground's existence, as long as "official" agencies keep their distance, which they have since the original investigation in 1996.
Judge as you will the veracity of all of this.

Navy Course of Fire Review

I’m trying to find many courses of fire to shoot and evaluate.  This is all I could find for the Navy.  I don’t know if they use this to qualify annually?  I don’t know.  If so, it’s a little flaky.

Navy  total of 48 live rounds:

  • From the 3-yard line: You fire a total of 12 rounds from the 3-yard line. With your strongest hand supported, you fire two rounds with a time limit of four seconds. You then holster your weapon and repeat the first firing sequence. You then repeat this process, except this time, you reload the additional six rounds and switch to your weak hand.
  • From the 7-yard line: During this section, you fire a total of 12 rounds from the 7-yard line. The first three times, you fire the weapon two rounds, strong hand supported. Then you have 10 seconds to fire two more rounds, reload, switch hands and fire two more rounds. After holstering your weapon, you have eight seconds to draw and fire your last two rounds.
  • From the 15-yard line: In this part, you fire a total of 24 rounds from the 15-yard line. Again, using your strong hand, you fire two rounds in four seconds, repeat and then fire four rounds before holstering your weapon. You then move to the kneeling position, where you fire four rounds, reload 12 rounds and then fire another four rounds before holstering your pistol. Finally, you have eight seconds to draw and fire your remaining eight rounds.

In order to graduate from Navy recruit training, you must achieve a minimum score of 180 points. Each area of the human-shaped target is worth a certain number of points. Vital areas (such as chest and head) are worth more than areas such as legs and wrist.

I gave the legs, arms, and shoulders 2 points each and 4 points for torso and head.

I ran this course 3 times and ended up with a best score of 192 and a worst score of 182.  It was not too bad, but it was no fun at all.  I think there are several areas that would improve this course of fire.  Also the scoring seems subject to interpretation.  Where does the chest end and the arms start?

Try it yourself and let us know your success or failures.

A Prophets Passing and An Attack on the Church

It was a sad weekend last weekend for the Church.  Our beloved prophet Russell M Nelson passed away last Friday.  He was 101 so I don’t think it was a large surprise.  It seemed he would go on forever but in the back of my mind, 101 is getting up there.

Then a nutbag ran into a Chapel on Sunday in Michigan, started shooting, and lit the place on fire.  From what I see 4 people didn’t go home.  Several other people were injured.  I’m assuming from being shot or maybe the fire.  Anyway, I want to say something about this incident.  To start, I want to say that I sustain our leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Those leaders in Salt Lake, and our local leadership.  This was a deliberate attack on the Church and its members. So “run, hide, fight” (RHF) was maybe partially effective.  But 2 guys in a “L” shaped counterattack would have stopped him quickly.  Even if the 2 guys had 9mm pistols and he had superior firepower with a rifle.  I doubt he ever engaged an attack like that even in Iraq.

But I digress.  This is just one more incident in a long list that I have collected over the years as proof of the need for more than RHF.  It also cements in me the fact that our enemies are creating this kind of hate.  By demonizing the Church and dehumanizing it as a “cult” you are fueling every whack job out there.  Whether it is extreme right or extreme left it always ends up like this.  I’m sure John Dehlin is not directly responsible for this type of behavior, but he, and those like him, are creating those who end up feeling that they need to rid the world of this “evil”.  I hold these type of people, anti-Mormons, partly responsible.  But I’m sure this won’t change their tune.  Other churches also are to blame.  Those church’s that constantly call our church a “cult”.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, exmos or ex members of our church that are bent on destroying the church are our greatest enemies.

The hate and vitriol that comes from these enemies needs to be curbed or more of these type attacks will continue.  And the Church needs to pull its head out of the sand and understand the vulnerable position we as regular members are in.  By policy I can’t have a lethal weapon on church property.  So, I hope if my chapel ever gets attacked like Michigan we can run away.  If that running fails maybe we can hide.  But if that fails there is nothing to fight with.  Bullets go through hymn books!

I am a trained weapons instructor.  So is my Bishop. Neither of us is law enforcement. Yet by Church policy, we cannot be armed on Church property.  I’m not sure what magic law enforcement or military for that matter, has but it’s something that eludes me.  There’s a quote from my old instructor Jeff Cooper

"Owning a handgun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician." ~ Jeff Cooper

This makes me wonder if it’s a liability issue.  But to put a worry about liability over my family’s safety doesn’t make me happy!

I’m not saying we need security guards.  What I’m saying is RHF is a very lame way to mitigate a deadly issue.  I read that during this attack on a Michigan ward that someone had hidden in a bathroom.  If someone was wandering around the building shooting people, hiding in the bathroom would make the murderers job easier.

I know what I would do if I were the Church.  I would put together a plan that included some brethren in a team. Not a hardcore tactical security team.  But just a group (maybe 3) of guys who do shoot.  They would need some training for liability reasons.  Different training would be advantageous. Criminal recognition, how fire teams work, etcetera. Members of this team do not have to be law enforcement.  They need to know what to look for and how to operate with an active shooter. They should have a background check and other requirements.  It doesn’t have to be a heavy thing, something loosely organized.  But something.

I don’t think we should make our chapels fortresses.  I think security can be achieved quietly.  When the Church organized a security department and executive protection for the brethren, no one really knew.  It was kept quiet for about a decade.  It’s possible and should be considered.

I’m not trying to be critical or contentious.  I just think it’s about time something happens in North America at least.  There may be other countries that need this.

Since there is nothing in place you need to be extra cautious.  Being in the chapel should be a calm, peaceful experience.  But we shouldn’t be in White.  There’s nothing wrong with being in Yellow.  Situational awareness is always something to stay up on.  Go through scenarios and have exits in mind.  Don’t be mindless and too comfortable.  Worship in peace, but always be prepared.

FBI Course of Fire Review

This is a review of the FBI Course of Fire.  I don’t think I’m an exceptional shot.  I can hit what I aim at, but I don’t feel I’m a very technical and precise shot.  I feel I can shoot a decent silver dollar group.  There’s always that flyer though.  Anyway, I can shoot a course of fire and know if it’s difficult and challenging.  I shot this course 3 times with a best score of 58 of 60.  My worst was 52 of 60.  I think it is a moderate course of fire.  The most challenging part is the distance (15 and 25 yards).

I feel that this course is better than many because of the strong/weak hand, reload, and shooting from cover.  Change of stances is also a bonus.  The time constraints didn’t bother me.  If they were a little tighter it might have put extra stress on me.  Overall, I would recommend this course of fire.  Shoot it and see areas you may need to change to make it more challenging.

Mix this with courses of fire and you can get some great practice.  I like the fact that it’s only 60 rounds.  I shoot 50 rounds in my own workout so 60 suits me fine.

FBI Course of Fire

Standards

National Preparedness Month: Home Emergency Kit

It is national preparedness month and so I feel every home should have an emergency kit.  This list is a suggestion and a place to start. Make sure you have the basics covered ASWiFF.

The basics of survival are: Air, Shelter, Water, Food, Fire

I also like redundancy in these areas.

If you already have an emergency kit now is a good time to go through it and replace and recirculate.

  • Water (2 gallons per person for drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a two week supply of non-perishable food)
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic sheeting, scissors and duct tape (to shelter in place)
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

Consider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs:

  • Soap, hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes to disinfect surfaces
  • Prescription medications. About half of all Americans take a prescription medicine every day. An emergency can make it difficult for them to refill their prescription or to find an open pharmacy. Organize and protect your prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and vitamins to prepare for an emergency.
  • Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids or laxatives
  • Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution
  • Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Cash or traveler's checks
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  • Complete change of clothing appropriate for your climate and sturdy shoes
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Mess kits, paper cups, plates, paper towels and plastic utensils
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children

As I said before this is a good place to start.
