I guess I had better write this article. I’ve had many inquiries about buying a gun for the first time. I’d rather post this here than answer everyone individually. So here goes.
1 What is the purpose for this gun?
Defense
Competition/Sport
Hunting
Recreation
Because I may not be able to buy one soon!
2 Find a gun that is right for you.
There are many guns, actions, styles, and calibers out there. Find someone you can trust and ask:
What size would be best for me?
What are the different actions, and styles and give pros and cons
What are the pros and cons of caliber
Cheap is usually never good
Do some research
Buy ammo when you buy the gun. Even if it’s just one box
3 There is more to a gun than just buying the gun
Responsibilities
Safety, security
Other items to purchase
Ammo
Safes
Holsters
Gun cleaning items
Training
4 Before you buy a gun know the 4 gun safety rules:
1 All guns are always loaded
2 Never point the gun at something you’re not willing to destroy
3 Keep your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard until sights are on the target
4 Know your target and beyond the target
I’m not kidding, really KNOW these rules!
5 Take a gun safety course
There are many gun safety and basic gun courses out there. Take at least one.
6 Read your gun manual
I know that it’s heavy on the “we told you so, don’t sue us” information but muscle your way through it at least once. You may learn something besides all the warnings they put in.
7 Be familiar with your gun
Besides the manual, there are is a plethora of information out about your specific gun. You tube has many informative videos about how to maintain, clean, and dis/assemble your gun.
8 Being responsible means knowing your local, state, and federal laws. Securing your gun is being safe
Don’t think of this idea of owning a gun as a frivolous thing. It is very serious and should be approached that way.
On the other hand, after all the above is accomplished know tha a gun can be fun and rewarding!
